Example Essay Examination Questions

1. (a) Analyze how the pedagogical structure of MGMT 310 fits with your personal learning style and learning preferences. (b) What elements of the course would you keep? (c) What elements of the course would you eliminate or change? In justifying your conclusions weave into your analysis your understandings of "learning," "knowledge," and "knowledge building."

2. Think about a time in your learning team when it was obvious to you that the team was in the middle of a "process loss" and you did or said nothing. (a) Briefly describe the process loss you observed, and (b) consider how you might have better responded to the problem. (c) How could you have personally benefitted by taking such action? In particular, consider the opportunity to build your "meta-cognitive" skills (i.e., how you think about your thinking). Draw on your understandings of "learning," and "reflection-in-action."

3. Suppose that you have been hired as a Teaching Assistant for MGMT 310. Your primary role is to facilitate the development of one student learning team. (a) Plan out a rough facilitation strategy that would move a learning team (such as your own) through each of the stages of team development (15 points). (b) Consider what kinds of things you might have to spontaneously do or say to facilitate team process as it unfolds in real time (10 points). Draw on the propositional knowledge pertaining to teams (text and handout material) and, of course, your own tacit knowledge about teams.

4. Based on your exposure to the conceptual material on communication, consider how you, personally, could improve your communication with your learning team. What is a) the one most important "barrier" to effective communication that you need to overcome and b) the one most important way you could be more "supportive" in your communication? Provide a brief rationale in each case. Lastly, c) suppose you recognized that you had sent a "mixed message" to one of your teammates, briefly discuss what strategy would you use to rectify the situation and why?

5. (15 points) Consider the semester ending "reflections" paper that you will be asked to write for MGMT 310 (see the excerpt from your syllabus below). How might you approach the writing of this paper as a creative problem solving process? Draw on the relevant conceptual material on problem solving (Note: you may wish to consider what kinds of conceptual blocks or cognitive biases might arise and how you could attempt to counter them).

One individual paper. Students will reflect back on, "describe," and "analyze" their personal experiences in their learning teams and experiences that they have had with other aspects of the course. In general, students may wish to focus on what they have learned about themselves as a learner and team member, their emotional and cognitive responses to learning and being part of a team, and the conditions under which they best learn and can best contribute to a team. In particular, students may wish to reflect on how they may think differently about themselves, their personal predispositions and assumptions about the world, and their knowledge and skill sets. These insights about self and changes in self may be a function of exposure to experiences and ideas encountered in class and perhaps the ways in which ideas have been used by the student both inside and/or outside of class since their initial exposure to them. Students are encouraged to maintain a journal of their experiences and may wish to append it to their paper. Students are expected to use course related concepts/terminology in their analyses and boldface (or underscore) those concepts/terms used. Papers are to be typed and are not to exceed five double-spaced pages. (GRADING WEIGHT = 50 PTS.)

6. Suppose that, before taking the next exam, you are encountered by a close personal friend from the 8:00 a.m. section of MGMT 310. This person has just finished taking the MGMT 310 exam and volunteers to give you information about that exam. (a) Critically think through how you may respond to this person by considering how your judgment and the justification of your response may be aided by one of the following ethical theories: "ethical egoism;" "utilitarianism;" "ethical formalism." (b) Discuss how "dialectical thinking" is involved in your processing of this information.
